Summary:

This is another seer stone owned by Joseph Smith. After Joseph's death Emma Smith passed it to her second husband, Lewis Bidamon. It is also known as the Bidamon seer stone. Joseph apparently had 2 of these stones that are about the size of a quarter. This seer stone can currently be found in the Wilford C. Wood Museum.

Why this matters:

  • Joseph had more than one seer stone, not just the one used to translate the Book of Mormon

Summary:

This is another seer stone owned by Joseph Smith. He purchased this stone from Jack Belcher who had a son that was using this "seeing stone" to locate lost items. After Joseph was killed, the stone changed owners, multiple times. It recently sold for $75,000 in 1993. I believe it is now in a private collection.

Why this matters:

  • Joseph had more than one seer stone, not just the one used to translate the Book of Mormon
  • This stone was used for at least some of the treasure hunts.

Summary:

Joseph Smith heard about a girl in a neighboring town by the name of Sally Chase that reportedly had a stone that allowed her to see hidden objects. Joseph visited the Chase family and asked to look into her stone. The story goes that when he put her stone in a hat and gazed into it he was able to see a white stone hidden under a tree nearby and knew that this white stone was his own seer stone. When he dug it up, this white stone became Joseph's first seer stone. This stone would have been used for Joseph's earliest treasure hunting days. Eyewitness accounts state that it looks like a baby's foot, wider on one side than the other. It is in the churches possession.

Why this matters:

  • Joseph had more than one seer stone, not just the one used to translate the Book of Mormon
  • The church has yet to reveal an image of this stone.

Summary:

Ron and Dan Lafferty belonged to the mainstream Mormon faith until they studied the history of the early Mormon movement and converted to Mormon Fundamentalism. Initially, Dan led many of his family members into an extreme and literalistic interpretation of Mormonism. His brother Ron, in an attempt to intervene, was converted to the family's cause and became their religious leader. Over time, Ron penned several revelations, including a revelation that the wife of his brother, Alan Lafferty, was to be "removed" for opposing the brother's fundamentalist movement. Ultimately, Ron and Dan brutally murdered their sister-in-law Brenda and her infant daughter, their niece. Ron and Dan intended to murder several others, but were arrested before they could carry out the rest of the prophecy. Incomprehensibly, several of their followers, including Alan himself, were aware of the fatal prophecy, and yet they failed to oppose Ron's prophetic authority and the alleged will of God. Throughout it all, the Laffertys believed that God was guiding them in all their actions.

Why this matters:

  • Lives were lost in the name of God.
  • Ron and Dan truly believed they were communicating with God.
  • Ron and Dan drew inspiration from and compared themselves to the story of Nephi having to kill Laban for the greater good in the book of Mormon.

Summary:

Hyrum Smith inherited this Dagger from Joseph Smith Senior. One side of the blade has the seal of Mars, the other has the sign of the Intelligence of Mars, the Zodiac sign for Scorpio, and the Hebrew letters for Adonai.

Why this matters:

  • It demonstrates that the Smith family had a fascination with magic.
  • The purpose of the inscriptions were evidently for magic purposes. "Adonai" inscribed on the knife was supposed to help you locate treasure.
  • The inscription seems to be tied to magical writings by Henry Agrippa.

Summary:

Joseph Smith owned this Jupiter talisman. According to subsequent owners of the talisman, Joseph had it in his possession when he was killed at Carthage.

Why this matters:

  • It demonstrates that Joseph had more than a passing fascination with magic as a teen.
  • If Joseph really did have it on his body when he died then it shows he was still very much interested in magic.
  • The purpose of such a talisman was supposedly to help the owner have influence over others, become rich, and powerful, and find peace among other things.
  • The inscription comes directly from "The Magus" which was a magical book by Francis Barrett.

Summary:

Joseph Smith translated a portion of what was later determined to be a forged artifact. It wasn't until 1980 that the plates were determined to be a hoax. After discovering the artifact near a skeleton the prophet stated:

I have translated a portion of [the plates] and find they contain the history of the person with whom they were found. He was a descendant of Ham, through the loins of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and that he received his kingdom from the ruler of heaven and earth.

For a long time only reproductions of the plates were available as the original artifact was lost. The plates were later rediscovered in Chicago and scientifically analyzed.  They turned out to be made by one of Joseph Smith's contemporaries in an effort to trick the prophet.

Why this matters:

  • The Kinderhook plates were a hoax.
  • Joseph Smith, the prophet and seer, could not tell it was a hoax
  • Joseph gave an overview of what the inscriptions meant, even though they were meaningless
  • It seems improbable that the story that would have emerged if a full translation had taken place would be related to the Book of Mormon. However the translation seemed to reinforce the book of Mormon.

About Me

I'm just a regular old Mormon that went on a mission, married in the temple and started a family. Later in life I discovered troubling issues about the church which did not seem to mesh with my understanding of the restored gospel. I ultimately left the church even though I really wanted to stay. I still respect the Mormon religion and identify with the culture.

I'm not a historian, and people searching for answers should really look to smarter people than me. But I'm hoping this blog will serve as a kick off point for anyone willing to critically think about the faith. These are just a few things I've encountered in my journey. Some fun, some serious, but all fascinating!
